Student of the Month Story
who: abbie brien
what: student of the month
where: bowie high school
when: current month
why: recommendations from teachers
how: teacher votes
Bowie High School named ninth grader Abbie Brien student of the month. Brien was nominated by her teachers for the title. Her outstanding grades and excellent behavior in class won the nomination. "I was named student of the month because of my hard work and perseverance," student Abbie Brien said. "All the hard work and effort that I've put in is definitely worth it."
Brien is ready to tackle the new responsibilities of the title. "There is enormous pressure from my teachers and parents," Brien said. "They see me as more hardworking and someone who tries their best."
This student of the month wants to show she's ready. "After school I go home and start on homework and study. I stay organized too. I make reminders and lists to remember to turn in homework on time." Brien said. Remembering due dates and test dates can be hard but Brien makes it sound easy. "She is usually the first person in the room, and immediately starts preparing for class," Brien's teacher, Michael Reeves, said.
Brien spends 4 hours a day on homework and 3 hours studying. In an interview with her mother, Cheri Brien said, "Sometimes she is too focused doing homework that she'll forget to eat. She usually stays up most of the night to finish studying." Abbie's mother is concerned for her health. Aside from endless studying, Abbie participates in extracurriculars. "I am part of the bowling team at Bowie, and I practice outside of school," she said. After asking how she balances school and extracurriculars, Abbie said, "There isn't much time for friends or family, but I'm doing what I love."
Being student of the month has its perks. "Colleges have reached out to me," Brien said. Having colleges be interested in you at a relatively young age is impressing.
There are challenges, however, that are faced with this title. "Compared to my peers I worked the hardest, but there is still jealousy from them," Brien said.
As someone who struggles with school work and classes, I asked Brien for her best tips and advice. "Don't give up and choose the right classes," Brien said. "Work hard and try to keep your GPA above a 4.0. Anyone who's hardworking and makes great grades could achieve this title."
